fyi - I got the following video error
upon upgrading ubuntu 11.x to 12.x

Unsupported video signal

followed suggestions posted here and resolved the issue

sudo apt-get -f install 
sudo dpkg --configure -a 
sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install gdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm ( then picked gdm )
sudo reboot
