They don't come that small any more, Matti! :)

I don't know how a "HTPC" differs from any other PC, but you would be
hard put to fill even 50GB with OS and programs, and I don't remember
ever topping 10GB.  In other words, if you're buying new, almost
anything you can find these days is enough.

Still in use here is one ancient machine with a .5 TB drive that the
BIOS doesn't even see, much less boot from.  The noisy old drive that
it boots from is only 4 GB, but in my case I'm willing to put programs
on the .5TB.  Less than 30MB of that 4GB is used, including a 3MB
2.6.26 custom kernel.  I power it down with hdparm -Y right after
booting.

If you're trying to save money, dust off some old drive in your garage
and build a bootable system on that!  :)
