That machine is probably ok for VM as long as you don't
do anything big inside it.  (Virus checker might be your
biggest memory hog!)

However, you might want to play around with Wine
just to see how well it runs ie6 and MS Office.
You can install ie6 with winetricks.  MS Office
is more complicated, you might have to check the
wine appdb for how.
Just keep the VM for when you run into trouble.

What kind of incompatibilities are you hitting with
OpenOffice, and have you tried the latest version?
