 - on "dave" [the web/mail server] since "X" is not installed, it doesn't have xgamma, however this system has backups of other systems -- scanning those reveals:

osnut:/ # locate gamma

/srv/ftp/SuSE/9.0/suse/i586/kgamma-1.0.1-281.i586.rpm
/srv/nethome/tom/src/jedi-sdl/Documentation/html/sdlgetgammaramp.html
/srv/nethome/tom/src/jedi-sdl/Documentation/html/sdlsetgamma.html
/srv/nethome/tom/src/jedi-sdl/Documentation/html/sdlsetgammaramp.html
/srv/nethome/tom2/.kde/share/config/kgammarc

/srv/nethome/tom2/.point2play/Sim Games/c_drive/Program Files/Innonics/Diggles/Data/GUI/gamma.tga
 --- this is an interesting one, "diggles" is a windows game, which I vaguely recall has a "screen settings" page which apparently included "gamma" information...

/srv/SuSE/src/linux-2.4.21-297/drivers/char/drm-4.0/gamma_dma.c
/srv/SuSE/src/linux-2.4.21-297/drivers/char/drm-4.0/gamma_drv.c
/srv/SuSE/src/linux-2.4.21-297/drivers/char/drm-4.0/gamma_drv.h
/srv/SuSE/src/linux-2.4.21-297/drivers/char/drm/gamma.h
/srv/SuSE/src/linux-2.4.21-297/drivers/char/drm/gamma_dma.c
/srv/SuSE/src/linux-2.4.21-297/drivers/char/drm/gamma_drv.c
/srv/SuSE/src/linux-2.4.21-297/drivers/char/drm/gamma_drv.h
/usr/share/doc/packages/phpdoc/manual/function.imagegammacorrect.html

taking a look at the "rc" file:
osnut:/srv/nethome/tom2/.kde/share/config # cat kgammarc
[ConfigFile]
use=kgammarc

[Screen 0]
bgamma=1.00
ggamma=1.00
rgamma=1.00

so there's another "defaulted to 1" datapoint for you

 - jumping over to "beast" [9.3 installed for AMD-64; nvidia display]
I see "xgamma" there, but cannot run it via ssh back to my windows session (go figure...) I also see a file in /usr/X11R6/bin called "fglrx_xgamma", which I suspect is the ATI "firegl" driver. "locate gamma" also returned the man pages for gamma, tgamma, lgamma, and signgam (by inferrence...) as well as obscure things like "latoomutgamma" (a printer driver?) and "foo2zjs/gamma-lookup.ps", and apparently a program for correcting scanned images: gamma4scanimage (ok, the man page states that it "[...] creates a gamma table in the format expected by scanimage.")
