*Job Summary*

Under general direction, this position manages system level networking of
routers, switches, gateways, bridges and firewalls. The Network Engineer
working from the Caltech campus in Pasadena also configures the field
hardware such as dataloggers, cell modems, and routers for the Southern
California Seismic Network (SCSN). The SCSN has seismic stations which are
located at approximately 400 sites throughout Southern California. The
Network Engineer will plan and schedule remote software upgrades to the
field equipment, and monitor and tune systems to ensure data integrity and
low latency. They will follow standard operating procedures to ensure
consistency and repeatability, and will be responsible for ensuring
compliance of all networking equipment with standard data communications
and IT security operating procedures. They will administer networking
equipment in-house as well as in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

*Essential Job Duties*

Design, implement, and maintain the wide area network (WAN) and local area
network (LAN) strategy of the Southern California Seismic Network project.
Configure, install, and troubleshoot associated equipment, such as routers,
switches, gateways, bridges, and firewalls.
Implement and maintain the Southern California Seismic Network Project's
routing (both dynamic and static) and TCP/IP protocol architecture, in
Pasadena as well as in AWS.
Optimize the SCSN network performance that includes integrating existing
and new technology with legacy systems.
Provide support to field engineers and troubleshoot equipment failures.
Ensure IT network security conforms to guidelines, practices, and
procedures.
Install, configure, and run software tools to monitor and analyze network
and radio frequency performance and resolve problems.
Implement proper configuration, operation, and installation of
communications networks and equipment.
Serve as a technical resource to other staff members on system/network
issues including documentation and training.
Other duties as assigned.

*Basic Qualifications*

BS degree or higher in Computer Science, Physical Science, or related
field, with 3 years of experience in networking.
Proficient in troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving networking
equipment, for example; routers, switches, gateways, bridges, and firewalls.
Experience with diverse data communications hardware.

*Preferred Qualifications*

Significant instrumentation and computer experience (i.e. LAN/WAN routers
and switches, Windows 10/11, Linux, etc.).
Proficiency in command-line scripting (Python, or shell scripts), and
ability to gather and analyze engineering performance data.
Diversity of electronic and mechanical troubleshooting skills desirable.
This includes experience with electronic test equipment (Volt-ohm meter,
oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, LAN tester, etc.), analog-to-digital
conversion dataloggers, RF data transmission, electronic cable
construction, and data communications networking skills.
Ability to analyze and implement IT network security.
Experience documenting work procedures and training others.
