[SGVLUG] Can I Manually Change an IP Address on my Local Machine?

/Assuming you have an actual modem, as well as this AT&T "Gateway"
device.../

I would personally use my linux machine as the "router", connected
directly to my modem (via eth0), and then connect the AT&T gateway
appliance (either directly, or through a dumb ethernet switch that is
connected) to my 2nd NIC (eth1), and use IP Masquerading (iptables /
ip_forward /etc.), to secure/isolate and easily monitor the traffic on
my network. This would of course involve various DHCP and Static IP
routing, but gives you much better control, and the confidence that you
can actually see what is going on within your network, than most
embedded router/firewalls, imo.

You can then use any number of the hundreds of network analysis tools
provided in common distros. (wireshark, sslstrip, etc.). Of course,
you'll spend hours and hours locking-down the 'router' w/ custom
iptables firewall rules, but that's a good exercise to learn, imo.

I'm sure most would suggest using OpenWRT on a 3rd party embedded
device, but that's no fun. =p
