Speaking as someone who looked into it a bit before I ran out of steam. . .

Yes there are "cash registers and credit card readers” on the network. The public wifi is just an “extra”. I was told the manager was the person to talk to about permission, but that some coordination with their DSL provider would be needed to guarantee the correct prioritization of the register traffic, etc.

Seemed like a fun/easy project until all the other parties got added in.

Now if it starts getting hard, another option would be a WiFi repeater. In particular if it could provide 5GHz service repeated from their existing 2.4GHz ‘Net then it wouldn’t be stepping on itself like standard consumer repeaters. We wouldn’t be using any BC service that isn’t already offered to the public except power.
