hmmm...

normally I would look at a lighter more
"static front page".
( or whatever page will get hit the most )

probably a good idea to tune the servers
( apache, mysql, etc.. ) I found some good
references to start with.

also remember to look at making complied 
versions of interpreted programs.
( iirc facebook does this to help... )
