Clearly they are missing the point, because there is an entirely free 
distribution of Android available targeted at the Freerunner, and as far 
as I can tell ( http://code.google.com/p/android-on-freerunner/) and 
doesn't include any proprietary portions. So they could have very well 
started there and went into a slightly different direction without 
Google's lead.

As a web developer though, more seemlessness between mobile and the web 
would be a big win, since it would mean more easily developing mobile 
applications, and there are a lot more JavaScript developers than Java 
developers, even if JavaScript is a bit quirky syntactically. 
CoffeeScript does make things more better for writing larger scale more 
maintainable scripts with JavaScript.
