As of last week, you no longer need an invite to sign up for Google
Voice as long as you are a US resident.

Also, Google Voice SMS now works with short codes (e.g., 40404 for
Twitter). It used to work only for complete 10-digit pohne numbers.
Since Google Voice is free, this means that the expensive text
messaging plans offered by the carriers are no longer needed.
