Doubtless true. Nobody knows all the facts.
But one fact is clear: To give a person a tool on condition that she
not try to understand it (that would be reverse engineering!) is a
humiliation and an insult. I would be embarrassed and ashamed to
admit to being party to any such thing.
There's also a moral issue. Using proprietary software contributes to
a general dumbing-down of society, the sort of pandering to ignorance
that made Gates his billions.

To "reverse engineer" something is to come to comprehend it, so what a
EULA really does is to forbid comprehension. For this they charge money?!
