You said this is going on a machine that was running win98? Does it
have a working DVD drive?

I tried ubuntu sometime last summer, it might have been the 6.06 -
dapper sounds familiar. I seem to recall I had a problem determining
which version to download. I think I tried the desktop version since
it was for my mother-in-law. It looked really nice but Mandriva 2007
came out a week or two later so I went with that since everything else
I have is Mandrake.

Actually, thinking back on it, I wasn't able to get a modem card
working with ubuntu so that's why I tried mdk but it wouldn't work
either. Turned out all of the pci modem cards i had were winmodem's
so i ended up using an external modem which works fine. it just uses
up yet another AC plug.

Oh, that's another thing. It looked like the version of ubuntu I was
trying assumed it had a broadband connection when ever you wanted to
install anything so I opted to download the 3 or 4 Mandrake install
cd's so every thing's available. She's only using Firefox for surfing
and gmail so I only expect to have to lug the box home once in a great
while for updates.
