Well, I agree that notice would have been the Right Thing--not the least
so that people knew they could take advantage of it.  But I don't see why,
given that it is done, we should remove it.

True, but I think it's better to have the archive.  I know that one of the 
most useful tools I have when I join a mailing list is to search the 
archives, both to get a sense of what the list standards are and also so 
that I can avoid any questions that have been done to death.  In fact, I 
very often curse lists that lack an archive between clenched teeth.
