Just for the record--the answer is, you *can't* do it from within Plone.  
You actually have to add roles to Plone groups from within the ZMI.  I 
don't know enough to even have an opinion as to whether this is good or 
bad, but I do have a rather strong opinion about Plone providing a handy 
GUI interface to do a job that is apparently never legal to do. :-)

To be fair, it tried to tell me that "adding roles must be done from 
within the ZMI", however...I thought it was talking about creating brand 
new roles, not adding existing ones to Plone groups.  And it provided an 
interface to do the forbidden operation to increase my confidence in my 
conclusion....
