There used to be public NFS servers on the Internet.  I remember
mounting a file system at a university a half a continent away, and
using all the usual Unix tools for navigating and copying.

I stopped using it because of the lack of anonymity, but if your
customers are using a web-based application, they apparently don't
care about anonymity.
