[SGVLUG] sound laptop oddities

A friend of mine installed FC4 (fedora core 4), recently on his laptop 
with docking station.  His music device is now the sound card on the 
docking station.  He claims that when he installed FC2 on the same 
hardware, the sound device was on the laptop itself (even with docking).
Anyone else experience this?

When I installed suse 9.3 on my laptop with docking station, I didnt 
experience that problem, but a different feature.  In the device 
hardware configuration, the sound levels were configured to be 0.
I didnt have this feature with previous versions of suse.   There are 
two elements to the "master volume", master and PCM.  setting either one 
of these to zero mutes the sound.   Okay, linux audio fans, what do 
these two elements "master" and "pcm" mean?
