Basically, YAST has a component that is the "installer" for SuSE specific RPM's and/or packages; this installer is also used for/as the "online update" capability of adding patches and packages after installation. This would be similar to YUM, EMERGE, and APT-GET (and red carpet, if that's still around...) used by other distributions.
