Semi-tangential to this thread is a "did you know..." item in our company's newsletter:
-------------
did you know?
Did you know that one of the most famous stock sound effects in the history of movies is known as the Wilhelm Scream? The distinctive yell was recorded in 1951 for the Warner Bros. film "Distant Drums" and was heard exclusively in the Studio's films until the mid-70s. It was around that time when sound editor Ben Burtt, while doing research at the Studio, decided to use it for the first "Star Wars" film. Since then, the scream has become an inside joke for sound designers who are still using it in many movies today.

Do a google search on "Wilhelm Scream" for an expanded version of the above story (the first hit also includes an embedded sound bite of the actual "classic" scream, a.k.a. scream #4, but be careful -- wikipedia notes that once people know of the scream, they tend to find it distracting when they "notice" it in films...)
