hardware/software project, Desknet, which is aimed at allowing children
to do computer-aided drills using one laptop and multiple wireless
keyboards. We are meeting at Du-Par's on Thursday, August 13 with the usual dinner at 7pm and the presentation at 8pm. Anybody who wants to help with room setup can show up a few minutes earlier and it would be greatly appreciated.

http://www.meetup.com/SGVTech/events/223669062/

Please spread the word to anybody you think who would be interested in this meeting as Open Source in Education is always a hot topic at SCaLE and other Linux conferences. Also, while RSVPing on meetup is not required, it's greatly appreciated so we can get a good headcount to ensure proper seating capacity.

You are not required to

interruptions during the presentation, please get your entire order in
(including dessert) as soon as you sit down. Ask for separate checks
and see if you can settle your bill before 8pm so that you do not have to worry about finding somebody to settle it during the post-meeting commotion.
Parking is behind the restaurant in a large lot shared by other
shops/restaurants on Lake. Parking tends to be a bit difficult around
6pm, but it might ease up after 7pm. It's not clear if they have a time
limit on parking in the lot, but nobody's reported any problems in parking
there for the duration of the previous meetings. You are welcome to read the signs for
more info or to ask the restaurant. You will want to avoid the stalls closest to the shops, as those might be short-term parking spots.

WEBSITE: http://www.sgvlug.org
TOPIC: Desknet -- An open source classroom tool
PRESENTER: John "Juan" Slayton
LOCATION: Du-Par's Restaurant and Bakery

August 13, 7pm
214 S Lake Ave, Pasadena, CA

BIO:

John Slayton is a native of Kansas City (Missouri side), but mostly
grew up in California. He received an MA from UCLA in Linguistics.

In the early 80's he became increasingly dissatisfied with his kids'
experience in the public schools and went back to school (Cal Poly
Pomona) to get a California teaching credential. He tried to get a job
with El Monte City Schools, and wound up spending the next 21 years
teaching bilingual classes at LeGore School. His class became his lab
in which he could try new things, not all of which turned out well. But
some worked. The Desknet project is one of these.
