I'm sorry I can't help. I don't even use Spaces on my Mac. I solve this problem at work by using multiple monitors hooked up to my Macbook Pro, with each monitor dedicated to a particular task. Part of this is because I'm usually monitoring servers, so I would rather just occasionally glance at a screen rather than actually switch workspaces. I like having a screen for my active workspace and a screen for my web browser, in case I need to look up references.

When I only have the laptop screen, I just use Cmd-Tab or Alt-Tab a lot.

Can you clarify on what exactly it is that you're looking for? I believe you're looking for something that switches around your desktops, similar to having multiple virtual displays in Linux. On my Windows boxes, I eventually just bought multiple monitors and KVM switches to see the whole picture on my multiple physical boxes. I think that's a bit beyond what most users will do (but it's 100% cross platform! ha!). I'll post the software I used to use once I can remember.

If not, then virtualbox, vmware player, ms virtual pc (lol), etc.

+1 for VirtualBox.
You just have to reconfigure the network from its default to "Bridged
Adapter" if you want to see the host from outside the box.
