Thanks Stan,

I was looking at SPLUNK as well.

To answer your question, no district has to buy computers from Intellitech. The state of California has three contracts which allow public agencies to buy computers with either steep discounts or additional services. The contracts are CMAS, WSCA and the Glendale Contract. I believe Intellitech works with the Glendale Contract. We moved from Intellitech to Dell about three years ago. Dell offered us similar service for less price. Dell works with CMAS and WSCA. Every school district falls under those contracts. School districts can also try CDWG who carry a greater variety of products with third-party service.

One thing you have to have with a school district is quality products and service. Chances are a school district won't have a large staff and enough resources to properly sustain systems. If you buy at Fry's the quality is questionable and the service is non-existent; you're just asking for problems.
I haven't used it and I haven't looked into it in depth, but you might want to check out Splunk (splunk.com). It won't meet all of your needs, but it should meet some of them. There is a free version that you can try out on a small network. There was an interview with the Splunk Ninja on the PaulDotCom security podcast recently (http://pauldotcom.com/wiki/index.php/Episode164)

I see from your LinkedIn page that you work for the Charter Oak Unified School District. I'm curious if your school district has to buy all of its computers from http://www.intelli-tech.com as some districts do. I have been volunteering time (I am unemployed and since I can't get anyone to pay me, I work for free. I just hope to be able to survive until the economy gets better.) at another school district that does and it seems that in many cases they have to pay double what they could buy the same computer for at Fry's and they don't get very good support. I would think a school district would be a big enough customer to deal directly with manufacturers and get a bigger bang for the buck, especially when budgets are tight.
I'm in the market for a new network management tool. I'm trying to manage routers and server and archive their config changes. I also need to monitor intrusion detection and server or system failures. I also need a log server.

What tools do you all recommend for these activities?

--
Joel Witherspoon

LinkedIn: ç
