Assuming the black screen is a screwed-up X session, you should be able
to jump to a different virtual console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2, e.g.,
to get to vt2. To jump from a text console to another session, use Alt
+ the F-key for the session (no Ctrl). Your X session is probably on
vt7, at least it is on Fedora. I am running from Knoppix and X is on
vt5.
Or when booting, if you are using grub, press "e" at
the boot
screen for "edit." Scroll down to select your kernel, press "e" again;
then press the spacebar, type "1" for runlevel 1, then press Enter.

Now press "b" to boot to runlevel 1.
