Okay, I have confirmed that the GitHub talk will be postponed till the December LUG.

The upcoming software/data carpentry talk will be rescheduled to a later LUG meeting.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Also, I'm getting a bit burnt out managing LUG. Can we get together a working group to manage SGVLUG administrivia? You guys are pretty awesome when I ask you to help out, but it's a little disheartening to be making all the decisions on my own or with just a little feedback on IRC. If you've wanted more involvement in LUG, now is the time to step up.

Hi all,

I tried to email this out yesterday, but apparently only sent it to myself.

Reminder that we still need an emcee for Thursday. Basically, if you're there, I'm going to tap you to fill in. I still do not feel well and do not have much of a voice.

Apparently, our speaker is also recovering from an illness and doesn't have much of a voice at the moment. There is a chance that he will need to reschedule for another time; he will let us know by the end of business today. I will update everyone tonight about what to expect. I'd appreciate it if we can still fill up the venue.

If the GitHub talk is postponed, we will still meet. Mike Weilgart graciously agreed to be our last-minute substitute with his well-received "Git Foundations: Basic Concepts and Definitions," which was presented at UUASC/LOPSA-LA. My impression of his talk is that he really gets into Git's internals, so this talk is really good if you've ever wanted to wrap your head around how Git actually works. He will also be doing a half-day class at SoCal Code Camp on Sunday @ 9am on "Git Foundations: Unlocking the Mysteries."

ABSTRACT:

Dozens
of commands! Hundreds of options! Git has dumbfounded sysadmins and
developers alike since its appearance in 2005. And yet, this ingenious
software is among the most fantastically useful ever developed. Learn
Git from the ground up and the inside out with Git Foundations Training!
This talk explores Git’s internals in depth.

BIO:

Mike Weilgart has loved maths and computers all his life. Graduating high
school at the age of 13, he thereafter worked in a variety of positions
including software QA, calculus teacher, and graphic design, before
resolving to put his love of computers to professional use as a Linux
sysadmin and trainer. Mike currently consults at a Fortune 50 company as an automation specialist, and enjoys nothing more than training people to full mastery of their tools.

LanPS Thanks very much to Jess for always being willing to swing in with an emergency talk. This time, you won't have to.

Hi all,

Reminder that we have an SGVLUG meeting this Thursday. Please RSVP on Meetup or with me. Our host is providing food and drink, so it would be nice to give them a good estimate.

Also, I'm recovering from a cold, so I'm not sure how much of a voice I will have. I need a couple of volunteers to emcee, make the announcements, go through Linux in the News, introduce our speaker, etc.

Subject: Next SGVLUG meeting: GitHub Webhooks

Hi all

This is a heads up notice before I update the Meetup and website:

Next week's SGVLUG meeting will be on git hooks and the GitHub API. Our speaker is from GitHub. I anticipate it to be a popular meeting so please RSVP early if you intend to attend. My preference is that you RSVP on Meet-up, but you can also do it directly to me.

We are meeting at a new place with a classroom setting and capping attendance to around 55 seems like a good idea...I think there are only 48 actual seats.

We will be meeting at Everbridge training center, which is a few blocks north of Du-Pars. Unfortunately, the parking for that building is super-expensive so you're advised to find alternate parking. On the plus side, Everbridge is willing to sponsor food and drink.

I will be updating the Meetup notice on Thursday night with all the information including speaker abstract and bio. (HAK meetings are the best time for me to catch up on admin is trivia.)

Let me know if you have questions.

Lan

PS the topic for December's meeting is software and data carpentry--these are nonprofit organizations that teach basic software development and data skills in domain-specific ways to empower researchers with little computational experience.
