[SGVLUG] 56kbps over cable phone?

I've never had phone service through a cable company. Do the phones plug in
to some special box that hooks up to the cable system via coax?

Perhaps you can do an experiment and try to sign up for netzero or some
other dialup ISP to see if your modem signals can travel over the line?
