Tom,

Do you have need of an old server for them? I have one that's not being
used and wouldn't mind donating it to a worthy cause.

Jason

Subject: [SGVLUG] Dev/admin sig for August: backup server

First off, the next Devsig meeting will be quite early in the month of
August - in fact, it will be on the 1rst!

At the last meeting we got the kinks worked out for some e-mail accounts,
and tuoched upon some of the discussion as to why they were having problems
in the first place: the "backups" that the system was making were filling
the drive/partition where the e-mail configurations were stored...

This month my dad and I will be renovating some old hardware to add to their
network to work as a "backup server" - and by this, I don't mean the kind
that stands-in for the primary server should it fail, but rather a server
that sits on the net and actively probes-and-pulls data from the other
computers in order to make a backup. Anyone with experience in setting up
this type of server is welcome to lend a hand on the logistics and
configuration; anyone interested in LEARNING how to create such a server
should plan on attending (though space will be limited - seems there will be
some other groups in attendance that day - please RSVP to me(*))

Some of the details that we will work out at the meeting will be the actual
network configuration (the library has multiple subnets to keep the
"webserver" in the DMZ and the rest of the "client" computers safe from the
the big-bad-internet...) Also up for discussion will be the backup strategy
and configuration of the software [most likely we will use "Amanda", but if
you have a better suggestion we're all ears...]

(*) I've set up a facebook "group" for SGVLUG and set this up as a "closed"
event - if your on facebook, join the group and send a request to be invited
- if you're not on facebook, send a message either to my home address
[osnut at pacbell.net] or work [tom.emerson at wbconsultant.com]

And a final p.s.: although I've posted this announcement on the main list,
I'd like to keep discussion on the dev-sig list - see the sgvlug website for
details on joining the devsig list.
