Actually OBDII helped Your mechanic sense the standard has to be open
and documented (its the law), but that does not make it cheap. If it
was not for OBDII every manufacturer would use a different proprietary
interface and protocol. I did not answer earlier because I have not
really "hacked" OBD. I just have an OBDII to computer interface. You
can check out http://freediag.sourceforge.net/ which is an open source
project to talk to OBDII, they have a lot more info.
