[SGVLUG] Gettagging the easy way...

Well, after several fruitless searches for an already-invented wheel, I found out, quite by chance, that what I wanted to do is already built into digikam :)
Mind you, the /parts/ of the wheel were there -- gpsbabel would convert my magellan "tracks" to "gpx" format, and there are perl & python "libraries" for managing exif data, but it was looking like I was going to have to do some work /learning/ perl or python AND learning the EXIF format AND learning the library AND possibly destroying all of my pictures in the process...
However, I found in the digikam menu, "images -> geolocalization -> correlation" -- this brings up a form that lets me open a GPX file and set an offset to GMT, then search for times in the file that correspond to the time the photo was taken. As a bit of a test, I had photographed the display of my GPS. The time IN the photo was about 6 seconds different than the time according to my camera, and as we were driving at the time, 6 seconds was quite a bit different so far as position was concerned. However, correcting for this and re-tagging the photo managed to get it within a few hundredths of the position per the photo. (I've shrunk it down and attached it -- < 5k)
When I get back, I'll show a more complete example of the process at a future meeting...
