Which way is Ubuntu headed these days, towards gently awakening the
novice to the joy and power of improved visibility into the inner
workings of the computer, or towards papering over every gap in the
GUI?

Could it be that greater emphasis on the first would catch more
people?

What's more true, that a computer exists to make informative or
entertaining displays, or that a display exists to provide visibility
into the state of the computation?
