Indubitably, that was my point. The cultural phenomenon we're talking
about is a generation that is *proud* of not teaching their children
absolutes, some because they don't believe they exist and others "so
they can make up their own mind." Then they are dismayed that some
*truly* believe that there are no absolutes and thus in the consequence
that there is no morality above social convention, and others choose a
religion utterly opposed to their own culture that offered absolute
standards without apology. People are born believing in standards, and
all the brain-washing in the world has not been able to entire erase
that knowledge from a population.

The alternative is to teach absolutes, as you say. But which? We once
had a society with widely shared values, and it was possible to do this
in public school. But now, we do not have such a thing, and
simultaneously we have an educational system which believes it has the
right to teach it's own ideology and uses every possible tactic to
retain that hold. So if you wish to teach values and yours are not those
of, say, the NEA, you will find that the government is teaching your
children contrary to your beliefs with your money.

In Germany they know this--home schooling is a crime. There isn't any
difference between that and Stalinist Russia, except that the current
German government has a different ideology. What ideology will it have
tomorrow? Who knows, but Germans have already handed the keys to their
children's minds to the government in advance so if and when a really
nasty government is voted in, it's pre-approved to enforce its ideology.
