An event has occurred which has left X on this two-screen machine in a
strange state. Can you help me to understand the state and get out of
it?

My focus at the time was on screen 0. The first indication was the
sudden disappearance of the fvwm borders on some xdvi windows that I
had displayed on screen 1. The pointer can be moved as usual from
screen 0 to screen 1, and mouse focus follows the pointer as usual,
but keyboard focus does not! Mouse functions such as the xdvi
magnifier and page-select buttons in a gv window also visible on
screen 1 work normally. Hotkeys to those same windows do not; in fact
the keyed characters appear instead in a window back on screen 0. Not
even the fvwm hotkeys for switching among screen 1 desktops are
functioning.

I could provide lots more details, but I don't know what's relevant.

I was playing an animation on screen 0 with vlc at the time of the
event, and vlc is the prime suspect. It has been known in the past to
play badly with multi-screen displays.

X has been up for 60 days on this machine and I don't want to take it
down unnecessarily. Ideas?
