Maybe I'm used to it now, but it doesn't take all that much to make it
behave -- there is an option to set a "prefix character" [as I've done
here] and that "huge block" at the top is taken care of as follows:

   <home>, <end>, 
   <shift-held> and <down/right arrow> until the word "of",
   <del>, <down>, <home> 
   <shift-down> to select the other "header" lines,
   and a final <del> 

if I wanted to get fancy, I suppose I could write a macro to correct
this obtuse behaviour, but since being obtuse seems to be the name of
the game here, managing a macro is more trouble than it's worth...
