Nice turn-out for my LinuxMovies.org "Studio Perl and GraphicsMagick" on
GrafPup presentation this week at Flash Film Works. We had about 20
people. Thanks to everyone for coming. That was a lot of fun!
Here's another Perl tech event coming up in Hollywood that you may want
to know about. Must see if you use Perl for Web programming or want to
learn more about it. Please email me off-list or to Todd if you plan to
attend.
See you there!

Subject: LA.PM: Mark Your Calendars: Randal Schwartz Tech Talk: Monday,
March 6th, 2006
Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 22:12:14 -0800
From: Todd Cranston-Cuebas <Todd.Cranston-Cuebas at Ticketmaster.com>
I'm pleased to announce that Randal Schwartz, of "Learning Perl" fame
(among other things!), is going to be in town next week and has agreed
to launch this year's perl tech talks!
Presenter: Randal Schwartz
Topic: Introduction to CGI::Prototype,
preceded by an introduction to Class::Prototyped
Location: Ticketmaster Office
8800 W. Sunset Blvd
West Hollywood, CA 90069
Date: Monday, 03/06/06
Time 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with an option to grab dinner after!
Parking: Below building. More details to follow.
RSVP: Please do drop a quick email to tcc at ticketmaster.com
so I can be make the appropriate arrangements.
Randal will be presenting an introduction to his perl-based MVC
framework CGI::Prototype which melds well with our recent discussions on
frameworks in general.
In his words...
"This talk covers the motivation for and basic architecture of
CGI::Prototype, a web framework that leverages Class::Prototyped objects
as the controllers of the MVC triad, yielding surprisingly simple but
extensible features for both small and big applications. Current
developments will also be discussed (Ajax, XSLT, and so on)"
Since Class::Prototyped objects act as the controllers in this
framework, Randal will also present a brief introduction to
Class::Prototyped to kick off the event.
Since this is the first perl tech talk of the year, I'm also hoping is
that we can get a representative group of individuals to this meeting
who will come prepared to make a few critical decisions. To that end...
1). Please bring a list of the top 10 topics you want to see covered by
someone who is a true perl guru. If I know what you're most interested
in, I can do my best to be sure that these topics are covered during the
course of
the year.
2). Bring your calendars! I want to establish a recurring monthly day
that we can hold these meetings. I'm hoping for a consistent day where
we won't clash with another LA-based user groups. I'm proposing the last
Tuesday of each month so we can still have the more casual dinner
meetings early in the month, but let's hammer that out on Monday.
3). If you have serious thoughts about locations for future talks,
please be prepared to not only suggest alternate cities, but other
specific locations (i.e., the meeting hall of the Elks Lodge down around
the corner in Notts Hole... etc.). This is far more helpful than "I just
hate driving to..." You get the point.
Finally, let's not spend time clogging the list with these issues if it
can be avoided. Let's get in a room and bang this out as best as possible.
Remember, this is your chance to make your opinion known so please show
up! If you can't attend, contact a list member you know (or me) and vote
by proxy.
Regards,
Todd
