What it always reminds me of is the scene in the great cartoon "One Froggy 
Evening" where no one will come in to hear the frog sing, even when the 
"manager" puts out a sign saying "Free Admission."  But when he puts out a 
sign saying "Free Beer" he is trampled underfoot by the surging crowd.
