John,

You need to know what the codec is. Saying you have a Quicktime file is a 
bit like saying something is lemon-scented -- pretty vague. If you can check 
using an Apple Quicktime player you can find out what type of codec it 
really is. The open source players only support a few Quicktime codecs. 
Apple Quicktime supports dozens, but the default is Sorensen. If Sorensen 
then nothing but Apple Quicktime can open it. In general, the best tool for 
converting Quicktime files is Apple Quicktime Pro (Windows or Mac, $30). You 
may be able to run the Windows version of Apple Quicktime on Wine.
